General Anesthesia

A type of anesthesia (loss of feeling or sensation) which total unconsciousness is obtained by administering a combination of injections and inhaled gases.  General anesthesia is sometimes used with oral surgery or more complicated procedures where the patient must be relaxed and pain-free for an extended period of time.  Complete recovery from general anesthesia often takes several hours.
